about

The wedding's in shambles! The groom— he is dead!
The bride— she has no veil to cover her head!
High spirits were broken when the poor jester fled.

Now the priest— he is dancing, with bottle in hand!
The bandsmen are silent, as they look on their stands,
for their music in an ungodly hand,
that only the groom understands.

Oh what a disaster! how could this befall?
The maids come to comfort the bride in the hall.
The jester! The jester! Who else would she call?

The priest— he is laughing and stumbling 'round!
The bandsmen are scattered as the knights search the grounds,
now who is in charge? as the knights gather round,
the music escapes underground.

The agents of fortune arrive far too late!
The bride, in her misery! has lowered the gate.
If the jester returns he will meet a swift fate—

For the priest! he is steady! with judgement in hand!
The bandsmen are gathered! At the scaffold they stand,
and their futures are written in the priest's even hand,
that only the knights understand.
